Tor
Short definition
Onion-routing network providing anonymous internet access through multi-hop encrypted relays.
Tor (The Onion Router) is a free network for anonymous communication. Traffic enters via a guard node, passes through a middle relay, and exits at an exit node — each hop only knowing its immediate neighbors. The result: by the time traffic exits to the regular internet, no single relay knows both the source and destination. Tor is operated by the non-profit Tor Project and runs on thousands of volunteer-operated relays globally.
For offshore hosting customers, Tor matters in two roles: (a) as a service to access — many hosts allow customers to run hidden services (.onion sites) on their VPS, (b) as a means to access the host's customer panel anonymously (most reputable hosts work over Tor). Some hosts allow customers to operate Tor relays — middle and bridge relays are typically uncontroversial; exit relays draw abuse traffic and require operator-host coordination.
