Which self-hosted cloud storage stack is the easiest?

Nextcloud All-in-One via the official Docker image is the most maintained option. Seafile is leaner and faster for raw file sync. FileBrowser is the simplest single-user file manager. Choose based on whether you need calendar / contacts / collaborative editing in addition to files.

Can I run client-side end-to-end encryption?

Yes — Nextcloud's E2EE plugin and Cryptomator on top of any storage backend both work cleanly. For paranoid setups, Cryptomator + Nextcloud means the server only ever sees ciphertext.

How much storage do I need?

VPS plans top out at 480 GB (VPS-16) before NVMe gets expensive. For multi-TB cloud-storage instances, mount a Storage-1 / Storage-2 / Storage-3 over WireGuard from a small VPS running the Nextcloud frontend. Sync performance is essentially unchanged.

Will the host scan my files?

No. We do not crawl, mirror, or fingerprint customer storage. Abuse triage is reactive on substantiated external complaints and never predictive.

Can I share public links from my Nextcloud?

Yes — Nextcloud's public-link feature works without restriction. You remain responsible for what you publish via those links under our standard AUP.

Should I run my own DNS for the frontend?

DNS doesn't need to be on the same host. Most operators use a separate registrar (Njalla, 1984.is) and point an A / AAAA record at the VPS. Our infrastructure does not require a specific DNS configuration.
