The pitch

Why pay with Zcash

Zcash uses zk-SNARK proofs to make transactions selectively private — addresses can be transparent (T-addresses) or shielded (Z-addresses), and transactions between two shielded addresses ("z-to-z") hide sender, recipient, and amount. This is the original "selective transparency" privacy model, and it remains a strong technical design for customers who want zero-knowledge proofs as their privacy primitive.

We accept Zcash via BTCPay's Zcash integration and support both transparent and shielded sends. We recommend shielded for privacy-conscious customers — z-to-z payments hide every component of the transaction. Confirmations match Bitcoin scaled to Zcash's faster block time: roughly 2.5 minutes per block, six confirmations for finality (~15 minutes), three for invoices under $500.

In practice, Zcash adoption has been smaller than Monero's despite a comparable or stronger privacy primitive — partly because shielded sends require slightly more proof-generation time on the wallet side, partly because transparent T-addresses dominated early-era usage and many wallets default to T. For customers who specifically want zk-SNARK-based privacy and don't want Monero's ring signatures, Zcash is the right choice. Pick z-addresses at send time.

  • zk-SNARK proofs hide sender, recipient, and amount on z-to-z sends
  • Selective transparency — choose shielded or transparent per send
  • Fees minimal — typically under $0.001
  • Refunds within 7 days paid back in ZEC
  • Halving-driven supply schedule — fixed cap at 21M
